Avodah Zarah 73

AVODAH ZARAH 72-76 - Sponsored by a generous grant from an anonymous donor. Kollel Iyun Hadaf is indebted to him for his encouragement and support and prays that Hashem will repay him in kind.

1) [line 6] KI ASA RAV DIMI AMAR REBBI YOCHANAN - when Rav Dimi came [from Eretz Yisrael to Bavel], he said in the name of Rebbi Yochanan

2) [line 8] RISHON RISHON BATEL - the first drop becomes nullified (i.e. each drop of prohibited wine becomes nullified as it falls in, and thus it does not prohibit the mixture)

3) [line 20] TZARTZUR KATAN - a small jug
4) [line 22] LO NAFISH AMUDEI - its column [of wine when poured] is not large
5) [line 25] KITON SHEL MAYIM - a pitcher of water
6a) [line 26] HA'HETER - the permitted wine (the wine that was in the pit before the Yayin Nesech fell into it)
b) [line 26] HA'SHE'AR - the rest [of the liquid in the mixture, referring to the water that fell in]

7) [line 30] MATZA MIN ES MINO V'NI'UR - one type has found its same type (the prohibited wine has found the permitted wine) and has thereby become strengthened (i.e. the prohibited wine makes the permitted wine prohibited as well)

73b---------------------------------------73b

8) [line 1] HIGDILU B'ISUR - Chizkiyah rules that if water, permitted wine, and Yayin Nesech are mixed together, and there is enough water such that the taste of the Yayin Nesech cannot be discerned in the water, the status of the mixture depends on the order in which the liquids became mixed. If the water and permitted wine were mixed first, and then Yayin Nesech fell into the mixture ("Higdilu b'Isur"), the mixture is prohibited (since the permitted wine becomes prohibited by the Yayin Nesech, and the taste of the combined wines can be discerned in the water). However, if the Yayin Nesech and water were mixed first, and then the permitted wine was added ("Higdilu b'Heter"), the mixture is permitted (see Insights).

9) [line 4] R"E - Rebbi Eliezer
10) [line 5] SE'OR - sourdough, a very heavily fermented dough that is mixed with fresh dough to cause it to rise

11) [line 5] CHULIN - ordinary, non-sanctified [grain]

12) [line 5] TERUMAH
See Background to Avodah Zarah 62:13.

13) [line 6] L'CHAMETZ - to ferment it (to cause it to rise)
14) [line 8] ACHAR ACHARON ANI VA - I rule that the mixture should have the Halachic status of the last ingredient added (lit. I follow after the last)

15) [line 10] LO SHANU ELA SHE'KADAM V'SILEK ES HA'ISUR - it (Rebbi Eliezer's view that the mixture follows the Halachic status of the last ingredient added) was taught only when he removed the forbidden ingredient before [the permitted ingredient fell in] (but if he did not remove the forbidden ingredient, then the permitted ingredient joins with the forbidden one to make an amount that causes the dough to rise, and thus the combination prohibits the dough.)

16) [line 12] CHIZKIYAH D'AMAR K'MAN - Chizkiyah says like whom? (He cannot be following the view of Rebbi Eliezer nor the view of the Rabanan.)

17) [line 13] RO'IN - the law whereby we "view" ("Ro'in") the same type of item (as the prohibited item) as if it were not present, thus allowing the other permitted item in the mixture to nullify the [smaller amount] of the prohibited item

18) [line 16] SHNEI KOSOS - two cups of wine (one of wine of Chulin, and the other of wine of Terumah)

19) [line 17] MAZGAN - he diluted them (with water, and there is enough water in the two cups together to nullify the prohibited wine)

20) [line 30] TEVEL
See Background to Avodah Zarah 62:13.

21) [line 40] K'HETEIRO KACH ISURO - like the way it becomes permitted, so, too, it becomes prohibited

22) [line 41] CHITAH ACHAS POTERES ES HA'KERI - a single grain of wheat exempts the entire pile (and fulfills the Torah obligation of separating Terumah)

23) [line 42] (V'TANYA) [U'TENAN] NAMI HACHI - a Mishnah also teaches this (that Tevel prohibits a mixture of Min b'Mino even with a minute amount)
