Sukah 26

SUKAH 26 & 27 (Iyar 11 & 12) have been dedicated by an anonymous talmid chacham to the memory of his mother, Sarah Dvosya bas Rav Mordechai of Milwaukee (Yahrzeit: 11 Iyar)

1)

(a) Why is a Chasan and his retinue Patur from ...
  1. ... Tefilah?
  2. ... Tefilin?
(b) Then why is he Chayav to recite the Shema?

(c) Rebbi Shilo differentiates between the Chasan himself and his retinue (regarding the Shema).
Why is that?

(d) Why are they not Patur from all the Mitzvos, because of 'ha'Osek ba'Mitzvah, Patur min ha'Mitzvah'?

2)
(a) Rebbi Chananya ben Akavya exempts Sofrim from all the Mitzvos as well as 'Tagreihen ... '.
Who are 'Tagreihen'?

(b) Whom does he come to include when he adds 've'Chol ha'Oskin bi'Meleches Shamayim'?

(c) Who is the author of the statement 'ha'Osek ba'Mitzvah, Patur min ha'Mitzvah'?

3)
(a) Why are travelers Patur from Sukah?

(b) But they are not always Patur.
When are travelers Chayav Sukah?

(c) The town guards are Patur under exactly the same circumstances as travelers. People who guard fields and orchards (presuming that they remain there twenty-four hours a day) are Patur both by day and by night. According to Abaye, they are not obligated to put up a Sukah and sit there, because of "Teishvu" - 'ke'Ein Taduru'.
What reason does Rava give for their being exempt?

(d) What is the difference between the two reasons?

4)
(a) Is someone who only has a headache, Chayav Sukah (if he is more comfortable in the house)?

(b) Rebbi Yossi B'rivi once granted Raban Shimon ben Gamliel, together with his servants, permission to sleep in the house because his eyes were hurting him.
Who was Rebbi Yossi B'rivi? What does B'rivi mean?

(c) May one go and sleep in the house on account of flies or an unpleasant odor (e.g. that comes from the ground)?

(d) Seeing as both a sick person and someone who is 'Mitzta'er' (in pain or disturbed) are Patur from Sukah, why does the Mishnah mention only the former?

5)
(a) Rav Yosef suggested that 'Achilas Ara'i' (that is permitted outside the Sukah) means two or three k'Beitzim (which is the equivalent to two or three mouthsful - see Tosfos DH 'Tarti T'las').
On what grounds did Abaye object to that Shiur? How does *he* subsequently assess 'Achilas Ara'i'?

(b) What is the difference between the obligation of *eating* in the Sukah, and that of *sleeping* there?

(c) Why can the reason for the stringency by sleeping not be because one may come to extend one's sleep into a 'Shinas Ke'va'?

(d) What is wrong with the contention that sleeping in one's Tefilin is permitted as long as one gets someone to wake him up (before his sleep turns into a 'Shinas Ke'va')?

6)
(a) Rabah bar bar Chanah quoting Rebbi Yochanan, permits sleeping a Shinas Ara'i ('forty winks') in one's Tefilin, provided one places one's head between one's legs.
Why is that?

(b) Rava is more stringent.
What does he say?

(c) Three Beraisos appear to dispute whether sleeping in one's Tefilin is permitted or not.
How do we explain the Beraisa which ...

  1. ... permits sleeping a Shinas Ara'i in one's Tefilin, but not a Shinas Ke'va?
  2. ... permits even a Shinas Ke'va?
  3. ... forbids sleeping even a Shinas Ara'i?
(d) What is the Shiur of Shinas Ara'i, according to Rami bar Yechezkel's Beraisa (and others)?
Answers to questions

26b---------------------------------------26b

7)

(a) If someone who is sleeping in his Tefilin sees Keri, what must he do, according to Rebbi Ya'akov in the Beraisa?

(b) What do the Chachamim say?

8)
(a) Why does Rav forbid sleeping during the day? What Shiur does *he* give for Shinas Ara'i?

(b) What did Rabah, Rav and Rebbi have in common?

(c) From whom did Rebbi learn this?

(d) Why did Rav Yosef once apply the Pasuk from Mishlei "Ad Masai Atzel Tishkav ... " to Abaye?

9)
(a) Under which *condition* does Rebbi Nasan permit sleeping in one's Tefilin by day? On what grounds does he permit it?

(b) What does he hold by night? Does he permit sleeping in one's Tefilin if one just intends to sleep a Shinas Ara'i?

(c) Rebbi Yossi argues with him, regarding youngsters.
What does he say about them?

(d) Does this mean that Rebbi Yossi is of the opinion that a Ba'al Keri is forbidden to wear Tefilin?

10) If someone forgot and went to bed with his wife wearing his Tefilin, what must he do? Does he remove the Tefilin via the straps, like someone who saw Keri (as we learned above in 7a)?

11)

(a) What did Rebbi Yochanan ben Zakai and Raban Gamliel both say when they brought the former a cooked dish and the latter two dates and a bucket of water?

(b) Why did Rebbi Tzadok take the food that they brought him in a cloth (without washing his hands), eat it outside the Sukah and then did not Bensch over it?

(c) The story with Rebbi Yochanan ben Zakai and Raban Gamliel follows the Mishnah which exempts eating Ara'i outside the Sukah. Why does Rebbi (who wrote the Mishnah) cite a story that appears to *contradict* the previous Halachah, instead of one that *supports* it, as he tends to do throughout Shas?

(d) How will Rav Yosef (who exempted even *more* than a k'Beitzah from Sukah) and Abaye (who exempted exactly a *k'Beitzah*) explain our Tana, who implies that Rebbi Tzadok exempts *less* than a k'Beitzah from Sukah, but not a *k'Beitzah*?
