Rosh Hashanah 15

ROSH HASHANAH 12, 13, 14, 15 (3-6 Menachem Av) - dedicated by the wife and daughters of the late Dr. Simcha Bekelnitzky (Simcha Gedalya ben Shraga Feibush) of Queens N.Y. on his upcoming second Yarzeit (7 Av). Well known in the community for his Chesed and Tzedakah, he will be remembered by all who knew him.

1) Why does the Tana of the Beraisa currently under discussion speak about an Esrog tree which was entering from the *third* year into the *fourth*, and not from the *second* year into the *third*, as in other places (see 12 a.&b.) ?

2)

(a) Rebbi Yochanan asked Rebbi Yanai which Sh'vat is the New Year for an Esrog tree.
What was his She'eilah?

(b) What did Rebbi Yanai reply?

(c) When is the New Year for an Esrog in a leap-year, Sh'vat or Adar (which is the seasonal Sh'vat)?

3)
(a) According to Rabah, a sixth-year Esrog entering into the seventh year is Patur both from Ma'aser and from Biy'ur.
What does he say about a seventh- year Esrog entering the eighth year?

(b) The Seifa of Rabah's statement suggests that Rabah goes after the budding of the Esrog with regard to Shevi'is.
How does Abaye finally know for sure that Rabah is *not* in doubt whether we go after after the budding or the picking with regard to Sh'mitah?

(c) Which criterion does he assume that Rabah follows with regard to Ma'aser?

4)
(a) What problem does Abaye have with the fact that the sixth-year Esrog exempt from Ma'aser?

(b) How is it in fact, Patur?

5)
(a) Rav Hamnuna agrees with every aspect of Rabah's statement except for one.
Which one?

(b) Rebbi Shimon ben Yehudah learns in the Reisha of a Beraisa like the Reisha of Rabah (posing a Kashya on Rav Hamnuna).
What does he say about a seventh-year Esrog entering the eighth year (which poses a Kashya on both Rabah and Rav Hamnuna)?

(c) What is Rebbi Shimon ben Yehudah's reason (for exempting from Ma'aser in the Reisha?

(d) If he goes after the budding of an Esrog (regarding Shevi'is), then why does he exempt it from Biy'ur in the Seifa?

6)

(a) Rebbi Yossi, in a Beraisa, cites the opinion of Avtulmus quoting five Elders regarding Esrog.
What does he say?

(b) He then cites the opinion of our Rebbes who concluded in Usha that by Esrog, we go after the picking, both with regard to Ma'aser and with regard to Shevi'is.
How do we amend the Beraisa to explain the fact that the Rebbes mentioned Shevi'is, although the Tana Kama did not mention it?

(c) Like which Tana will Rabah and Rav Hamnuna now hold?

7)
(a) Rebbi Yochanan and Resh Lakish maintain that a sixth-year Esrog that enters the seventh year is considered a sixth-year Esrog.
In which point do they disagree with Rabah and Rav Hamnuna?

(b) What Chidush did Ravin add to that, when he came from Eretz Yisrael?

(c) The Tana of another Beraisa cites the criterion of a tree (regarding Ma'asros) as being whether the fruits budded *before* Tu bi'Sh'vat or *afterwards*. Rebbi Nechemyah confines this to a tree which produces *two* 'B'reichos' annually, but a tree which produces only *one* goes after the picking. What is wrong with the Lashon of Rebbi Nechemyah? How do we easily amend it?

(d) To which kind of tree is he referring besides a date-palm and an olive- tree?

8)
(a) By which kind of tree does Rebbi Yochanan cite the Minhag as being like Rebbi Nechemyah?

(b) What are 'B'nos Shu'ach'?

(c) What does the Tana in Shevi'is say about them that clashes with Rebbi Yochanan's ruling?

(d) What was Rebbi Yochanan's reaction to this Kashya (of his disciple Resh Lakish)?

9)
(a) Why was Rebbi Aba ha'Kohen surprised at Rebbi Yochanan's silence? What might Rebbi Yochanan have answered?

(b) How did Rebbi Yossi ha'Kohen justify his silence?

(c) We reject the contention that Rebbi Yochanan did not rule like Rebbi Nechemyah, but merely cited the Minhag.
On what grounds is that unacceptable?

(d) How do we finally justify Rebbi Yochanan's statement? Why are carobs different?

10)
(a) In light of the Rebbi Yochanan's true reasoning, we conclude that it wasn't Rebbi Yochanan's silence that surprised Rebbi Aba ha'Kohen, but Resh Lakish's Kashya.
Why do we rule out the contention that Resh Lakish perhaps never asked it?

(b) Then what was the basis of Rebbi Aba's surprise? What were his two possible interpretations of Rebbi Yochanan's silence?
