prepared by Rabbi Eliezer Chrysler

Nidah 16

1) Rav Huna said in the name of Rav that if a woman has a Veses, but she makes a Bedikah only after her Veses is due to arrive - and sees blood, we contend both with her Veses and with her sighting.

(a) What does this mean?

(b) If Rav holds that Vestos d'Oraysa, why does he mention that she saw blood?

(c) How could we interpret Rav to hold Vestos de'Rabbanan?

2) A woman's Veses arrived and she failed to make a Bedikah. Later, she made a Bedikah and did not find blood, Shmuel says she is Temei'ah. Obviously, he holds that Vestos are d'Oraysa.

Rav rules that she is Tehorah.

(a) How is it possible for even Rav to hold that Vestos are d'Oraysa, and how will we then reconcile his opinion here with what he said a little earlier - in 1b.(according to those who explain there too, that Vestos are d'Oraysa)?

(b) If she searched immediately and did not find blood, why does Shmuel hold that she is Temei'ah?

Rebbi Eliezer and Rebbi Meir hold that Vestos are d'Oraysa, whereas Rebbi Yehoshua and the Rabbanan of Rebbi Meir hold that it is de'Rabbanan. Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel and Rebbi argue over a woman who sees blood from a wound. Rabban Shimon holds that even if she sees at the time when her Veses is due, she is Tehorah. Rebbi says that we have to contend with the possibility that it may be a Veses.
Initially, it appears that Rabban Shimon holds that Vestos are de'Rabbanan, whilst Rebbi holds they are d'Oraysa.
(c) Is it possible to interpret their Machlokes differently? Can they perhaps both agree that Vestos are de'Rabbanan, and what will then be the Machlokes?
3) Beis Shamai holds that a woman requires two Eidim for each Tashmish - even in the course of one night.
(a) When is she Bodek all the Eidim and what is the reason for this?

(b) What do Beis Hillel hold, and how do they counter Beis Shamai's reason?

(c) And what do Beis Shamai reply to that?

Answers to questions

16b---------------------------------------16b

4) Rebbi Zeira maintains that, even according to Beis Hillel, it is preferable not to make the second Tashmish before having made a Bedikah.

(a) What is his proof that Beis Hillel holds like that?

(b) How does Rava counter Rebbi Zeira's proof?

5) What is the difference regarding making Tashmish without examining the Eid, whether the Eid is there or not (i.e. it is lost), and why should there be a difference?

6)

(a) What does Rebbi Yochanan learn from the Pasuk in Iyov "(Yei'aved Yom Ivaled Bo,) ve'ha'Layla Amar Horeh Gaver"?
Resh Lakish learns the same thing from the Pasuk in Mishlei "Bozeh Derachav Yamus".
(b) How does he learn it from there?
(c) What does Resh Lakish do with Rebbi Yochanan's Pasuk?
(d) Why does Rebbi Chanina omit the question 'Rasha O Tzadik'?
(e) From where does Rebbi Yochanan learn this Derashah?
7) What are
(a) ... a 'Sar ha'Nargol be'Veis ha'Mishta'os', a 'Sar ha'Nargan' and a 'Sar ha'Nargaz'?

(b) ... 'Moshiv Sheves bi'Meromei Keras'?

(c) Which other two things did Ben Sira did not like?

(d) What did Rebbi Yochanan add to Ben Sira's fourth objection?
