1)

(a) Regarding the Pasuk in Hoshe'a "Va'yasar el Mal'ach Va'yuchal, Bachah Va'yischanen Lo", it is unclear who overcame whom, and who beseeched whom. What do we learn from the Pasuk in Va'yishlach, when the angel said to Ya'akov ...
  1. ... "ki Sarisa im Elohim Va'tuchal"?
  2. ... "Va'yomer Shalcheni"?
(b) How does Rabah interpret the double expression "ki Sarisa im Elohim ve'Im Anashim"? To which groups of leaders was the angel hinting?

(c) What incidental hint lies in the term "Anashim"?

2)
(a) We now discuss the dream of the butler in the story of Yosef (since it also deals with the future of Yisrael, and the termination of the Galus). Rav Chiya bar Aba Amar Rav interprets the three branches of the vine as the three 'Sarei Ge'im' in Yisrael, in each generation.
To whom does this refer?

(b) How were they divided between Eretz Yisrael and Bavel?

(c) The Rabbanan thought that the two brothers Rabana Ukva and Rabana Nechemyah were the Sarei Ge'im in Bavel.
Who was their mother?

(d) According to Rava, the three branches refer to the three Sarei Ge'im in Heaven.
To whom does this refer? What was their task?

3)
(a) According to Rebbi Eliezer in a Beraisa, the vine represented the world.
Who were then ...
  1. ... the three branches?
  2. ... the blossoms that turned into buds?
  3. ... the clusters of grapes that ripened?
(b) What objection did Rebbi Yehoshua raise to this explanation?

(c) He therefore interpreted the vine as Torah.
Who were then ...

  1. ... the three branches?
  2. ... the blossoms that turned into buds?
  3. ... the clusters of grapes that ripened?
4)
(a) Raban Gamliel remarked that we still need the explanation of Rebbi Alazar ha'Muda'i.
What was unique about his explanation?

(b) If Rebbi Alazar ha'Muda'i interpreted the vine as Yerushalayim, how did he interpret ...

  1. ... the three branches?
  2. ... the blossoms that turned into buds?
  3. ... the clusters of grapes that ripened?
(c) Rebbi Yehoshua ben Levi interprets the dream with regard to Matanos. According to him, the vine refers to Torah, and the three branches to the Well of Miriam, the Clouds of Glory and the Manna.
how does he then interpret ...
  1. ... the blossoms that turned into buds?
  2. ... the clusters of grapes that ripened?
(d) Whereas according to Rebbi Yirmiyah bar Aba, the vine is Yisrael (in Egypt). What are then ...
  1. ... the three branches?
  2. ... a. the blossoms, b. the buds?
  3. ... the clusters of grapes that ripened?
5)
(a) This last D'rashah tallies with that of Rava. How does Rava explain the three cups mentioned in the dream of the chief butler?

(b) What did Rebbi Aba tell Rebbi Yirmiyah bar Aba about Rav, in connection with his interpretation of the current Pasuk?

(c) What did Resh Lakish, in his interpretation of the Pasuk, learn from the Pasuk in Tehilim "Gefen mi'Mitzrayim Tasi'a"?

(d) If Resh Lakish compares the branches to the Ba'alei Batim, to what does he compare ...

  1. ... the clusters of grapes -
  2. ... the leaves?
  3. ... the tendrils?
(e) Why are the Ba'alei-Batim compared to branches, which constitute the main part of the vine?
6)
(a) What did they mean when they sent from Eretz Yisrael that the clusters should pray for the leaves?

(b) How does Rebbi Yochanan in the name of Rebbi Shimon ben Yehotzadak interpret the Pasuk in Hoshe'a ...

  1. ... "Va'echreh Li ba'Chamishah-Asar Kesef"?
  2. ... "Chomer Se'orim ve'Lesech Se'orim"? What are 'Chomer' and 'Lesech'?
(c) Bearing in mind the division of forty -five into two into two units, what is Rebbi Yochanan's Safek?

(d) How does he resolve his Safek from the Pasuk in Zecharyah "Va'ekchah Sheloshim ha'Kesef va'Ashlich Oso Beis Hashem el ha'Otzar"?

7)
(a) Abaye maintains that most of the Tzadikim in Eretz Yisrael (see Tiferes Ya'akov) are to be found in the Shul of Tusi Afsa.
What does 'Tusi Afsa' mean literally?

(b) What does this have to do with the Pasuk in Zecharyah "Va'omar Aleihem, Im Tov be'Einechem, Havu S'chari, ve'Im Lo Chidlu, Ve'eshkalah ... Sheloshim ha'Kesef"?

8)
(a) According to Rav Yehudah, the Sheloshim Kesef in Zecharyah refers to the thirty Tzadikei Umos ha'Olam.
What is special about them?

(b) Ula interprets it with regard to the thirty Mitzvos that the B'nei No'ach undertook to keep (see Anaf Yosef). How many do they actually observe?

(c) Two of them are that they do not write a Kesuvah on males (homosexual relationships) and they do not weigh out the flesh of corpses in the butchery.
What else might 'she'Ein Shoklin Basar ha'Meis be'Makulin' mean?

(d) What is the third Mitzvah that they observe?

9)

(a) We learned in our Mishnah that a bird does not have a 'Kaf ha'Yarech' (flesh that surrounds the thigh).
How do we reconcile this with the known fact that they do?

(b) What does Rebbi Yirmiyah ask with regard to a bird that has spoon-shaped flesh surrounding the thigh, or an animal that does not?

(c) What is the outcome of the She'eilah?

10)
(a) Following the statement in our Mishnah 've'Noheg ba'Shelil', Shmuel rules 've'Chelbo Mutar Divrei ha'Kol'.
What is the problem with establishing this by ...
  1. ... the Cheilev of a Sh'lil?
  2. ... the Cheilev of the Gid ha'Nasheh?
(b) With reference to Gid ha'Nasheh, Rebbi Meir, in a Beraisa, rules 'Noheg ba'Shelil ve'Chelbo Asur'.
What does Rebbi Yehudah say?

(c) How does Rebbi Elazar Amar Rebbi Oshaya define 'Sh'lil' in the Beraisa?

(d) What does he then mean when he adds that Rebbi Meir and Rebbi Yehudah follow their own reasoning? To which Machlokes is he referring?

11)
(a) We have already learned that, according to Rebbi Meir, one needs to root out all the Cheilev together with the Gid.
What does Rebbi Yehudah say?

(b) We conclude that Shmuel is referring to the Cheilev of the Gid ha'Nasheh.
How do we reconcile this with the fact that Rebbi Meir forbids it?

(c) The basis for this is the Beraisa 've'Shamno Mutar, ve'Yisrael Kedoshim Nahagu bo Isur'.
On what grounds do we query this proof?

(d) We answer by citing another Beraisa 'Gid ha'Nasheh Mechatet Acharav be'Chol Makom she'Hu, ve'Shamno Mutar'.
What does that prove?

12)
(a) Rav Yitzchak bar Shmuel bar Marsa citing Rav restricts the Isur of Gid ha'Nasheh to the K'noknos (thin Gidin that lead from the outer Gid to the inner one).
What makes him say this?

(b) How does Ula counter that?

(c) Abaye supports Ula on the basis of a statement by Rav Sheishes.
What did Rav Sheishes Amar Rav Asi say about thin strands of flesh that one finds in the Cheilev? Where will one find them?

(d) How does that prove Ula's opinion against that of Rav?

13)
(a) What did Rav Sheishes Amar Rav Asi say about the thin strands of flesh that one finds in the kidneys?

(b) What do Rebbi and Rebbi Chiya say about the white that one finds there?

(c) Rabah (or Rava) and Rebbi Yochanan used to root it out.
What did Rebbi Asi used to do?

14)
(a) Abaye supports Rebbi Asi on the basis of a statement by Rav Yehudah Amar Shmuel.
What did Rav Yehudah say about the Cheilev that is covered by the flanks (which are under the kidneys)?

(b) Why is that?

(c) How does that prove Rebbi Asi's opinion against that of Rabah and Rebbi Yochanan?

15)
(a) Why do some Poskim forbid the Cheilev of the flanks that are covered by a thick membrane?

(b) What is Minhag Ashkenaz?

(c) What is the Din regarding the white that is in the kidneys?
